Identify the doctoral model
Some PhD routes are program/cohort-based; others are project- or supervisor-centered; some combine both. The model determines when to contact faculty, where funding sits and how admission is assessed.
Research fit before outreach
Read recent publications, lab/project pages and doctoral opportunities. A generic topic overlap is weaker evidence than a clear methodological or project-level connection.
Normalize the funding package
Verify stipend/salary, tuition treatment, mandatory fees, insurance/benefits where applicable, duration, renewal conditions and expected teaching/research duties. “Funded” without duration and coverage is incomplete.
Funding duration must match degree reality
A grant can end before the degree. Check the funded period, extension assumptions and whether continuation depends on milestones or renewed appointments.
Supervisor availability is not implied
A faculty profile or shared research interest does not prove capacity, willingness or funding. Treat these as questions to resolve through current project pages, program instructions and appropriate outreach.
Build an evidence-rich contact strategy
Outreach should demonstrate that the applicant understands the faculty member’s current work and can state a specific research connection. It should not ask the professor to perform basic research the applicant could have done first.
A shortlist output should expose dependency
For every surviving option, state the hard admission gates, base financial case, realistic funding routes, unresolved evidence and the next action. A single composite match score hides too much of this structure.
Verify the latest official source before applying
Degree requirements, award cycles and deadlines can change. Scholar’s public content provides the research method; the decisive facts still need current program, institution, funder or government evidence appropriate to the claim.
